Abstract

Gear skiving is a technique for high-precision machining for internal gears of machinery. In order to estimate the timing of tool replacement accurately, quickly evaluation for the tool wear amount on the machine. In this study, we developed an on-machine system that can easily estimate the amount of tool wear by observing images using a camera. The system configuration and image processing method for extracting tool geometry are described, and basic experiments to detect the amount of wear with micron-order accuracy are reported.
