- Metaphors of Eyes, Gender, Witch : Analyzing Hsueh-Lin Su’s “Kunāla’s Eyes”
抄録
Kunāla’s Eyes was a three-act tragedy written by Hsueh-Lin Su in 1935. The play was based on Prince Kunāla's story from Buddhist scriptures. Su imitated the manner of Salome produced by Oscar Wild, especially in the character image of heroine. In this aesthetic tragedy, Su put the original marginal female character at the center of the stage, depicting the character’s inner desire, obsessive pursuit of love and beauty, and the rebellion against the patriarchal canon. Thus, the scene of this play worked beyond the original art realm. However, up to now, this play is not attracted much attention from literary researchers. In this thesis, I analyze this work from the perspective of gender studies with the image of the heroine as the entry point. In particular, I research on the metaphors of the key element "eye". I hope my thesis may raise some new understandings to Su's aestheticism.
