Abstract

This research note aims to trace the personal history of Chandra Talpade Mohanty, an Indianborn U.S. feminist, as a preliminary work to clarify her theoretical framework of “Third World” feminism and anti-capitalist transnational feminist critique. Mohanty’s work as a feminist theorist has been well-known all over the world since her 1986 article “Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and Colonial Discourses,” and she has made her mark on feminist history as a leading critic of colonialist representations of Third World women by Western white feminism. However, her personal background that has shaped her theoretical thought has not been adequately discussed. Also not well known are her unique activities committed to an actual political agenda, such as her collaboration with organizations supporting poor workers, her protests against the imperialist global strategy of the U. S., and her creation of a video archive documenting the life stories of women of color feminists. In this paper, I shed light on the personal experiences and institutional contexts from where the theory of Third World feminism symbolized by the 1986 paper emerged, as well as how the theory evolved into what political practice in response to the latest phase of capitalism, to provide an auxiliary line for understanding the significance of Mohanty’s theory today.
