Abstract

Articles

The purpose of this study is to critically examine the normativity of E. Levinas’s theory of sexuality and to present possibilities that emerge despite its normativity. To that end, I try to articulate both normativity and possibilities of his theory of sexuality from the standpoint of “queer.” In the first section, I set out a philological foothold to critically examine the theory of sexuality in Totalité et infi ni from the viewpoint of temporality. For this purpose, I explain why this book demands the temporality of fecundity. In the second section, I explain that the temporal structure of fecundity lies in a patriarchal, heterocentric, and cisgender-centric perspective that privileges reproduction. In the fi nal section, I demonstrate that Levinas’s late writing departs from the normativity of the concept of fecundity and includes queer readability. To that end, I fi rst read late Levinas’s theory of aging and show that this theory can be materialized from the perspective of sexual relationships in M. Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu. Furthermore, I argue that contrary to the heterocentrism that Levinas’s reading of Proust ostensibly presupposes, the theory of caress in Autrement qu’être ou au-delà de l’essence (1974) shows a queer bodiness that deviates from heterosexual reproduction.
