Intergenerational Upward Educational Mobility of Non-University Graduate Parents and Extended Families : From siblings to aunts/uncles

Abstract

This study examines the analytical framework of the relationship between intergenerational upward educational mobility and extended families of non-university-educated parents in postwar Japan from the viewpoints of region and generation. The influence of family on social mobility has been analyzed not only in terms of parents but also in relation to siblings, grandparents, and aunts/uncles. However, studies of siblings, and parents and aunts/uncles have been conducted independently of each other. Therefore, we review the previous studies from the viewpoint of how the intragenerational migration of the siblings affects intergenerational migration as the aunt/uncle effect. We hypothesized that the status attainment gap among siblings was caused by intra-generational mobility that was fluidized by educational expansion in the postwar period and non-mobility due to persistent inheritance and succession practices in rural areas. The educational expectations of non-migratory parents may be raised by relative educational dissatisfaction caused by later references to the status attainment of migratory siblings, resulting in intergenerational upward mobility. Thus, by theoretically connecting the studies on the status attainment of siblings and those on parents and aunts/uncles, we develop an analytical framework in which the parents’ upward mobility orientation toward the next generation stems from the inequality among siblings, which has been previously missing in the two-generation model retroactively constructed from the survey subjects.
