Abstract

This is a summary of the research on the construction of the main hal l and main gate of Shofukuji Temple in Toba, Mie Prefecture, which was undertaken by the master bui lder Touemon Takenaka IX. (1) Both the main hall and the gate were built in the first half of the 19th century by Touemon Takenaka IX and were donated by shipping companies. The carvings were done by several firstrate carvers in Nagoya. (2) In order to build a full-scale model of the upper three-stepped bracket complex of the main hall for the exhibition, we carried out a survey using a 3D laser scanner and estimated the dimensions of the bracket complex, considering the transformation of the carving. (3) We researched the ac t iv it ies of Kuzo Nakamura, who was a master bui lder of the construction of the main hall and the temple gate, and clarified that Nakamura, who was born in Nagoya, settled in the Shima area after a long period of construction and was involved in the subsequent construction of the Taishido hall and Katada Inari Shrine with his sons.
