Abstract

A fundamental study was conducted on the bubble size distribution of entrained air in concrete using vibration compaction. Two vibration methods, internal vibration and external vibration, were employed, and a 200mm cubic formwork was used. In the case of internal vibration, it was observed that water collected around the rod vibrator, and the air moved in the opposite direction of the vibrator horizontally. Vertically, the air moved upward due to buoyancy. Air bubbles adhering to the formwork slowly moved along the surface of the formwork. On the other hand, with external vibration, the formwork vibrated, resulting in the inward movement of entrained air, contrary to internal vibration. By combining these methods, it is believed that efficient vibration compaction can be achieved while retaining entrained air.
