Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to identify differences in the oncological genetic/genomic nursing practices among different positions in the healthcare sector. Methods: Between August 2019 and February 2020, we conducted an online survey involving 1,482 nurses working in cancer care collaborative facilities nationwide. We compared the responses from three distinct groups: general managers (equivalent to head nurses or those in higher positions), middle managers (equivalent to chiefs), and non-managers. Statistical analysis, including ANOVA and Tukey's test, was performed to assess variations among these groups. Results: Out of the 1,482 target nurses, we received 137 valid responses. Middle managers surpassed the nonmanagement group in tasks related to collecting information and teamwork in the context of genetic/genomic medicine and nursing. Moreover, middle managers significantly outperformed general managers in assessing the risk of cancer development. However, the level of nursing practice in genetic/genomic nursing was perceived as "a little" to "not much" across all groups. Conclusion: Middle managers have started recognizing the importance of genetic/genomic nursing practice and are taking initial steps to collaborate with colleagues in this area. In the future, it will be essential to provide support and resources to enable middle managers to assume roles as leaders in disseminating genetic/genomic nursing practices.
