Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Using an exploratory analysis method called Steps for Coding and Theorization (SCAT), we aimed to clarify and structure physical therapists’ (PT) professional characteristics. Methods: A web-based questionnaire (Google Forms by Google, Inc.), which asked “What is your perception of PT professional characteristics (uniqueness and expertise)” in an open-ended format, was used. The sample comprised 139 PTs (104 males and 35 females; mean age: 34.8±9.1 years). The inclusion criteria were PT who belonged to clinical or educational institutions and were currently engaged in physical therapy work. The SCAT, a qualitative analysis method, was used to analyze the obtained textual data. Conclusion: Seven concepts of PT professional characteristics were identified; elements related to PT professionalism, PT professional characteristics were described, and PT professional characteristics were demonstrated. However, many of the descriptions were related to the comprehensive perspective of rehabilitation medicine and included information that was difficult to distinguish from that pertaining to other professions. Additionally, this result indicates uncertainty related to professionalism in some PT.
