Abstract

Practice Reports

This article describes an annual workshop designed and implemented within the framework of collaboration with the Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education since December 2022. This one-day workshop consists of a lecture and practice sessions to improve questioning skills regarding Inquiry-based Learning (IBL). In the lecture, the following topics are introduced: 1. the importance of questions in the context of academic discussion, and 2. instances of questioning and various methods of logical reasoning. In the second half of the workshop, there are three sessions. Every student participates as a presenter in one session and as an audience member in two sessions. To encourage participants to improve their questioning skills throughout the sessions, each session was designed as follows: 1. Providing sufficient time for participants to come up with their own questions and share them with each other, 2. Facilitation of Osaka University students in each group to ensure psychological safety, and 3. Using various tools to visualize participants’questions and make them easy to share with other participants. Since this is an annual workshop, in which high school students can participate only once a year, there is a limit to measuring and tracking how much the questioning skills of participants have improved. However, the results of the questionnaire indicated this workshop received positive evaluations and have been useful content for IBL.
