Abstract

Rescuersmust interrupt chest compressions during electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis andan electric shock with an automated external defibrillator (AED). However, itis unknown whether rescuers correctly interrupted chest compressions as guidedby the AED. OBJECTIVE:Toverify whether rescuers interrupted chest compressions during ECG analysis andthe administration of an electric shock. METHODS:Fromthe AED's internal recordings, we extracted events in which an electric shockwas administered, and verified whether or not chest compressions were performedduring ECG analysis and the administration of an electric shock. RESULTS:A total of 888 events were extracted. In 20 events, chestcompressions were performed during ECG analysis. In one of these events, chestcompressions were performed also during an electric shock. CONCLUSION:In 2.3% of events, rescuers did not interrupt chest compressionswhen guided by the AED. The improvement of cardiopulmonary resuscitationeducation and the AED functions are desired.
