Abstract

Since the 1980s, a new film genre has emerged in France: "cinéma de banlieue", set in suburban housing estates and depicting the lives of immigrants. Director Lady Li's work can be classified in this genre, but his new film, Block 5, while incorporating the entertainment elements of his previous film, Les Misérables, is a more political one, based on personal experience, that problematizes immigrant housing.
