Abstract

Disabilities have two aspects: physical and mental damage, and socioculturally constructed aspects. There are various approaches to historical analysis. This paper focuses on the following three perspectives. The first is a historical perspective that takes into account changes in the recognition of disability. Second, it is a multifaceted perspective that focuses on the relationship between disability and culture. Thirdly, there is a life history perspective that takes into account the elucidation of the actual living conditions of people with disabilities. We will review various studies from these three perspectives. In other words, this is a cross-disciplinary overview of various issues in the history of disability from ancient times to modern times. This is an attempt that has not been seen before. The reasons for undertaking such an attempt are as follows. In other words, in Japan, a methodology for describing the entire history of disability has not yet been proposed. Differences in historical research on disability between Europe and the United States and Japan are thought to be due to differences in human diversity and perceptions of disability.
