Abstract

Eliza Talcott, missionary sent to Japan by the American Board, focused her efforts on evangelism and the education of Japanese women throughout the Meiji period, and during her time in Japan, she recognized the figure of the Bible Woman. This study discusses the image of the Bible Woman Talcott sought through her activities during her furlough in the United States and her missionary work in Hawaii, and evaluates Talcott's establishment of Bible Women for female Japanese Christians as one of her achievements during her missionary work in Japan.
