Evaluation of the mechanism of the bone augmentation process for a rat vertical bone augmentation model using polytetrafluoroethylene tubes

<p>In this study, based on a model of vertical bone augmentation in a rat skull using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tubes, two bioabsorbable bone replacement materials, carbonate apatite (CytransR granules, CGs), and β‐tricalcium phosphate (β‐TCP), were placed in the center of the skull. Bone augmentation was performed by transplanting CGs or β‐TCP in a PTFE tube placed at the center of the skull. Specimens were collected along with the surrounding tissue at 4, 8 and 12 weeks postoperatively for radiographic and histological evaluation. There was no significant difference in the number or spacing of osteophytes in the material‐transplant groups, and there was no difference in the quality of the new bone. Although the time of appearance of osteoclasts was the same for both materials, more osteoblasts appeared earlier and bone formation occurred earlier with the β‐TCP granules, which were absorbed earlier than with the CGs.
