Abstract

Shiga Prefecture is conducting a “Biwaichi” tourism campaign. However, most of the roadways along the shore of Lake Biwa have just two lanes, and there is a lot of automobile traffic, as they serve as main routes in the prefecture. Thus, it is a critical issue to ensure the safety of bicycles, as their number grows on the roadways, while simultaneously providing for the roadways’ functionality as prefectural highways. In this study, the effects of additional shoulder space for bicycles on two-way two-lane road considering the overtaking behaviors between bicycles and automobiles are analyzed using an agent simulation.
