In this study, the authors examined what undergraduate/graduate students in Japan learned via online conversation sessions with participants from Japan and China. Based on the analysis of the reports submitted by the students, the authors found that the students in Japan had opportunities to learn the following by communicating with Chinese learners of Japanese living in China: (1) how the Chinese learners of Japanese participate in conversations and their Japanese competence; (2) how the students in Japan adjust their own language use according to the Japanese levels of the Chinese learners in order to communicate with them smoothly; (3) how conversation sessions should be held from the perspective of Japanese language teaching; (4) how Japanese language teaching should be conducted in terms of the content and methods of teaching. Based on these findings, the authors conclude that participating in conversation sessions facilitates students’ acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes which are required for Japanese language teaching professionals. Moreover, through these activities the students had valuable opportunities to familiarize themselves with the context of interacting with Japanese language learners while adjusting their language use. The authors also argue that online conversation sessions provide great opportunities for easy transnational communication and should be held more frequently.
