Abstract

We analyze a TM-pass/TE-stop terahertz waveguide polarizer with an InAs semiconductor layer using the three-dimensional (3-D) semi-implicit finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. First, we newly formulate the 3-D frequency-dependent semi-implicit FDTD method based on the trapezoidal recursive convolution technique. In this paper, the implicit scheme is introduced only to one direction, in which a small spatial mesh is required for the analysis of an InAs layer. Next, we analyze the terahertz waveguide polarizer. The field distribution, guided mode power, and extinction ratio are calculated and compared with those obtained from the explicit FDTD method. It is found that the results of the semi-implicit FDTD method with a large time step agree well with those of the explicit FDTD method. It is also shown that the calculation time is reduced to 22% of that of the explicit FDTD method, even with a time step fourteen times as large as the explicit one.
