Abstract
Many applications for sharing trajectory data, such as running, cycling, and climbing visualize the trajectory data in both plan and elevation views. To reduce trajectory data size, Line Simplification (LS) is used to remove vertices while preserving the shape. LS for trajectory elevation views has the problem of losing important extreme points, including peaks and valleys. We propose a new LS method that removes vertices from 3D trajectory data for generating both a plan view and an elevation view which keeps important extreme points. We implemented the proposed method as an interactive application and confirmed its effectiveness through quantitative evaluation.
