Description

Co-optimization of the combination of engine and fuel will improve the engine thermal efficiency and consequently reduce global CO2 emissions. This study evaluated an engine with super lean-burn conditions, and tested various components to enhance the thermal efficiency. Baseline single-component studies were conducted with reagents, then fuel compositions were investigated that can be produced at refineries and synthetic fuels for practical use. A fuel composition that combines fossil fuels and biofuels could increase the lean limit, one of the indicators of super lean burn, by up to 0.25 points. By expanding the lean limit and suppressing knocking, thermal efficiency was improved by 4 points. Combined with the CO2 reduction effect of biofuel, this improvement is equivalent to 35 % CO2 reduction.
