This article examines assistance by the ‘Appropriate Adult’( hereafter : AA) in interrogating juvenile suspects in England and Wales. The AA scheme is prescribed under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (hereafter : PACE) and the Code of Practice C (hereafter : Code C) to safeguard the rights, entitlements and welfare of vulnerable suspects including juveniles and vulnerable adults at the police investigation ; however, this article focuses on only juvenile suspects. In terms of the AA scheme, there are various issues which include the suitability of AAs, the role of AAs, the use of volunteer AAs, the provision of AAs and so forth. In addition, the grave concern is that the definition of the role of AAs in the police interrogation is not only ambiguous and contradictory, but also has broad implications ; therefore, in practice AAs interpret their role by themselves and AAs have extended their role. Through the discussion of the AA scheme, in particular focusing on the recent trend, this article concludes that it is important for AAs to be present in the police interrogation and provide support for juveniles, which lead to promoting access to legal advice and protecting the right to legal advice of juveniles.
