Description

Microwave heating is one of the key technologies for new chemical processes that effectively utilizes the renewable energy. Microwaves are capable of highly efficient heating due to direct heating of materials; thus, efficient biomass conversion can be achieved. Microwave is also expected as a tool to control chemical reactions, because microwaves heat the materials in a non-contact mode and induce chemical reactions. This paper introduces examples of biomass conversion processes, such as extraction using hydrothermal reactions, catalytic hydrolysis reactions, and rapid pyrolysis reactions of lignocellulose, that exploit the unique heating behavior of microwaves.
