説明

In the previous study, we surveyed Japanese and Italian mothers of university students and found differences between the two countries in how the frequency of physical contact behavior changes from infancy to adolescence. In this study, we investigated what factors contribute to changes in the frequency of physical contact behaviors through interviews with mothers in both countries. We found that in Italy, close physical contact behaviors such as kissing and hugging are taken as a means of communicating love and parental presence to the child. In contrast, in Japan, it was found that there are strong age norms regarding physical contact, and that in adolescence, both mothers and children develop feelings of rejection and embarrassment towards physical contact behaviors, resulting in a decrease in physical contact behavior. Interestingly, however, half of the Japanese mothers were found to regret not engaging in physical contact behavior with their children.
