Description

Objective: This study was conducted to construct a process of growth from the perspective of stages and relationships and identify future research challenges through a scoping review of qualitative studies of the experiences of mothers of students of chronic absenteeism at school.

Methods: We used a scoping review to search the literature based on PRISMA-ScR. After searching Ichushi Web and CiNii for qualitative research papers in Japan published in 1990-2022, we reviewed the selected qualitative research papers and used thematic analysis to organize the findings from the perspective of stages and relationships.

Results: Seventeen papers of studies were included in the analysis. The greatest numbers of them were from the field of psychology and from self-help group participants. Fewer were peer-reviewed. Many specified No analytical method.

By organizing the findings from the perspective of stages and relationships, we extracted three themes indicating the stages of the process of growth[loss of relationships],[changes in perception and behavior and conflicts],and[reconstruction of relationships], and four themes indicating relationships[chronic absenteeism at school], [self],[my child], and[family and surroundings].

Discussion: The growth and development processes of a mother of a student of chronic absenteeism at school can be understood as personal recovery, by which the mother once loses the relationship among the event of Not attending school, herself, her child, her family, and those around her. Subsequently, a new relationship is rebuilt, without reversion to the original mutual relationships. Furthermore, the importance of overcoming the stage of [change in perception and behavior and conflict]was demonstrated. Four challenges remain for future research:(1)accumulation of studies using systematic methods,(2)surveys targeting mothers who do Not receive social support and mothers in single-mother households,(3)clarification of a transition from the stage of“change of perception and behavior and conflict”to the stage of“reconstruction of relationships,”and(4)clarification of multiple relationships and changes in them over time. By addressing these challenges, important theoretical developments can be realized.
