Description

With the advance of information technology and globalization, the nature of cities, the way people work and live, and the way they think are changing dramatically, are the suburbs that have grown with the 20th century sustainable? This paper examines the transformation and prospects of metropolitan suburbs in the Tokyo area.
The concept of the modern family's separation of work and home, which characterized the suburbs in the 20th century, has been shaken. The one-worker, one-housewife household is no longer the typical family, and the number of single-person households and childless families is increasing, resulting in a remarkable diversification of families. With the aging of the population, the number of households with only elderly people is increasing, and the number of commuters from the suburbs to the city center is decreasing. Meanwhile, the new generation, many of whom come from the suburbs, is becoming more locally oriented and moving away from the middle class. The suburbs are no longer a special place in the vicinity of a large city, but are becoming a place no different from the many regional cities in Japan.
In this context, oversized metropolitan areas are shrinking due to population decline, and suburbs and outlying areas are becoming increasingly differentiated. Even if the suburbs are sustainable as suburban residential areas, they are no longer a homogeneous middle-class society, but a patchwork of diverse residents. In contrast, the far suburbs have been hollowed out by the large number of vacant houses and lots, becoming spongy spaces with little substance. Just as suburban sprawl became a problem in the past, there is concern that suburban sponginess will become a problem in the future, and an orderly retreat strategy is needed.
