Description

One teaching of Mahāyāna Buddhism is that women cannot attain Buddhahood; if they wish to attain Buddhahood, they would have to be reborn as males and become Bodhisattvas. This idea can be said to be contemptuous to women. However, this is a mainstream view, and some sūtras state that women can become Buddhas without changing their sex, although they are few. I found passages in the Sanskrit manuscripts of the Lotus Sūtra that state that the dragon-girl became a Bodhisattva while being a woman. The older the manuscripts, the more often the female form is used. What does this mean?
