• Adhimutti and Adhiṭṭhāna: Perspectives on the Work of Realising Thoughts

説明

This paper examines words derived from the Sanskrit adhi-√muc used in Pāli literature. The purpose of the paper is to view adhi-√muc, sometimes associated with adhiṭṭhāna, as a word with the function of realising thoughts.

1: adhi-√muc as used in the Pāli canon with regard to good rebirth can be pointed out as an aspect that contributes to the realisation of the desired rebirth. However, it is only practice that directly realises rebirth.

2: Turning to the Pāli commentaries, in the case of sarīre adhi-√muc, it is through adhi-√muc that Yakkha, Māra, Bodhisatta, etc. put others in a state in which they can manipulate them to their own will.

3: And in the case of adhimuttikālakiriyā, the Bodhisattas immediately die to realise their rebirth into human beings as intended.

2 and 3 differ from 1 in that adhi-√muc is directly connected to the desired state or result, but they share the same function, in that the adhi-√muc itself is seen to bring thoughts (desires, wills, intentions, etc.) into reality.
