Description

This is part of an effort to translate the educational works of Janusz Korczak(1878-1942)into Japanese from the Polish. Moments for Pedagogy(Momenty wychowawcze, other translations,"Educational Moments","Moments in Upbringing)is one of his most representative educational works, and one of his books written largely for the training of young educators in the 1910- 1920s*. This book is made up of 4 chapters - I. Grade one, primary school, II. Primary-level classes at a girls' private school, III. Helcia, and IV. Untitled [Stefan]-(2nd edit.1924; 1st edit. 1919, only chapters I-III). In these chapters are included the many important "moments"for pedagogy that attracted Korczak. Declaring the need for" diagnostic"pedagogy in this book, Korczak insisted on the significance of observing children's behaviors and identifying signs such as "smiles, tears, and blushing" that are essential for diagnosis. The"objects"of observation in these chapters are a grade-one pupil, a schoolgirl named Vwadzia, a kindergartner called Helcia, and Stefan, a war orphan. In all cases he observed"humanity"and"nature"in the object-child. For this translation, the following Polish text was used; Janusz Korczak, Janusz Korczak dziela, t. 7, Warszawa, 1993. s.362-426. * For more of Korczak's educational works for the training of young educators in the 1910-1920s(Japanese translation), see also, Chihiro Tsukamoto,"Dr. Korczak's teacher training; a message for young teachers - Selected excerpts from the works of Janusz Korczak-", Bulletin of Nayoro City University, Vol.1, March 2007.
