Description

Therapeutic presence is the essential therapeutic stance in psychotherapy. Now that the pandemic has led to the widespread use of remote counseling, the need to find new ways to enhance therapeutic presence is increasing. The current study aimed to make a Japanese version of the Therapeutic Presence Inventory (TPI) and explored the possibility and the effects of experiencing therapeutic presence at a distance by conducting two studies with different aims. Study One made a Japanese version of the TPI. Its reliability and validity were examined in online counseling sessions. Study Two investigated the relationships between therapeutic presence and the clients’ psychological changes. The findings of Study One suggested that the Japanese TPI has sufficient reliability and validity. Those of Study Two indicated that therapeutic presence could be experienced even online. In addition, ‘Interpersonal Alienation’ decreased continuously among clients who experienced a strong therapeutic presence in the first session. Through these results, it is believed that this study demonstrates the possibility of supporting clients suffering from loneliness through therapeutic presence, even when face-to-face contact is not possible.
