Description

We conducted two experiments to assess the impressions of a right-ascending design of handwritten text fonts. For the first experiment, 20 college students were presented with poster images of handwritten fonts that were right-ascending from 0 to 36 degrees. They were then asked to rate their impressions of the fonts using pairs of adjectives. Results indicated that the right-ascending design of the handwritten fonts did not improve the impression of beauty, but that it did improve the impression of dynamism. For the second experiment, we investigated whether the results of the first experiment were specific to handwritten fonts. Twenty college students were presented with poster images and were asked to rate the font impressions in 0, 12, and 24 degree conditions for handwritten, Mincho, and Gothic fonts. Results showed that improvement in the dynamic impression was common to all fonts and demonstrated that the effect was greatest for handwritten fonts.
