<p>The author first reviews data collected from those closely involved with actual practice teaching in local schools in order to discover what competencies are required of student teachers before, during and following their undergoing practice teaching. Based on this, he proceeds to describe the development of university-level self-teaching programs on these basic teaching skills. He also outlines the design, implementation and assessment of the development of guidelines and materials for promoting competence in practice teaching.</p>
