New records of Rhopalomastix omotoensis Terayama, 1996 from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Description

Rhopalomastix omotoensis Terayama, 1996, known only from Japan and Taiwan, is a myrmicine species nesting only under the bark of living trees. In Japan, this species has been recorded only from Omoto-dake on Ishigaki-jima Island, southern Ryukyu Islands. This study records R. omotoensis from five islands from both the central Ryukyus (Okinawa-jima and Kume-jima) and southern Ryukyus (Ishigaki-jima, Iriomote-jima, and Yonaguni-jima). These represent the first records of the species from the four islands other than Ishigaki-jima Island, and additional sites on Ishigaki-jima Island are also found. This study also expands the northern limit of the distribution of the genus Rhopalomastix (Kunigami-son, Okinawa-jima Island, Okinawa Prefecture: 26 ̊83’N).
