Description

Soot formation in spherically propagating rich unstable iso-octane laminar flames was investigated by means of a two-dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS). Results show that soot is mainly generated at the cusp area of the unstable cellular flame front compared to the convex area toward the unburned mixture. Soot formation was regarded as the combination of major four processes, nucleation, surface growth, coagulation and oxidation. The effect of surface growth was found to be the largest on the rate of soot mass change.
