Description
The physical properties such as density, viscosity and dielectric constant(D) of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)-cyclohexane mixtures have been measured, and the fundamental studies have been performed on the application of the mixtures to solvent extraction polarography. As for supporting electrolytes, the solubility of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate was less than 0.1 M in the mixture containing cyclohexane more than 30 v/v % (D<9). On the other hand, tetrabutylammonium trifluoromethane sulfonate was soluble to the extent of more than 0.1 M even in the MIBK-cyclohexane (50%) mixture (D=6.5), and more advantageous than perchlorate as a supporting electrolyte from the stand point of electrolytic conductivity and degree of dissociation. In the MIBK-cyclohexane (0 to 40 %) mixtures as well as in the pure MIBK, the dc polarographic reduction processes of ferricinium ion: (C5H5)2Fe+, sodium ion and tris(acetylacetonato)-iron(III) were reversible and diffusion-controlled ones. Iron(III) was quantitatively extracted from aqueous solution (0.1 M sodium citrate and 0.08 M boratephosphate buffer solution) into the MIBK-cyclohexane (30%) mixture containing 0.1 M acetylacetone in the pH range 9 to 10, and some improvements were observed in sensitivity and accuracy in comparison with the extraction by the pure MIBK. Dipolar aprotic solvents may be applied more widely to analytical chemistry as solvent mixtures with non-polar solvents.
