Description

The elution characteristics of cations (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) in a serial column method is studied. Three peaks are observed for each cation when an anion exchange column (Yokogawa, ICS-A23, 4.6 mm i.d.×75 mm) is connected to the back of a cation exchange column (Yokogawa, ICS-C25, 4.6 mm i.d.×125 mm) and a mixture of tartaric acid (TA) and 2, 6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) is used as eluent. The first peak was caused by elution of the cation and the depletion of eluent ion (H+) in the eluent. Bacause the anions in the eluent (TA and PDC) form ion pairs or complexes with cations, the concentration of TA and PDC in the eluent were reduced when the cations were eluted from cation exchange resin. Thereby TA and PDC eluted from the cation exchange column were retained on the anion exchange resin by an ion exchange or distribution mechanism. Consequently, the second and third peaks have appeared corresponding to the depletion of TA and PDC anion in eluent, respectively.
