This is an attempt to describe a high sensitive method for the spectrophotometric determination of phosphorus. Primarily, phosphorus as phosphate was converted to molybdophosphate, which was extracted into isobuthyl methyl ketone-cyclohexane (11 : 9, v/v) mixture. The organic solvent phase was evaporated to dryness being separated from the aqueous phase, and the resulting residue was dissolved into an ammonia-water mixture. Then under the nitrogen atmosphere, the molybdenum (VI) was reduced to molybdenum(III) with sodium borohydride at pH 1.0. Ferric ion was added to the solution to produce ferrous ion equivalent to molybdenum (III). Then, resulting ferrous ion was converted to Ferroin by the addition of 1, 10-phenanthroline. Ferroin was extracted with Bromophenol Blue (BPB) as ion associate with a molar ratio of Ferroin : BPB = 1: 1 into 1, 2-dichloroethane at pH 8.5. Finally, the absorbance at 605 nm was measured against the blank extract. A calibration curve ranging 30 ng to 160 ng of phosphorus was found to be linear and the apparent molar absorptivity at 605 nm was 1.43×106 l mol-1 cm-1. The ralative standard deviation at 155 ng as phosphorus was 2.5 %. The method was applied to the determination of phosphorus in rain and tap water, and had good reproducibility for several ppb levels of phosphorus in 510 ml samples.
