Description

Although the extraction-photometric methods involving oxine have been extensively investigated and widely used, the results do not agree well because of the difference in the procedures employed. Also 8-hydroxyquinaldine, a derivative of oxine, has recently been used for the same purpose.
The purpose of this paper is to present some basic data for the extraction of about 20 metal complexes of the two reagents under definite conditions.
Three ml of 1% reagent solution are added to a metal solution and the pH is adjusted. The resulting solution (about 50 ml) is shaken with 10.0 ml of chloroform for 1 minute. The absorbancy of the chloroform extract is measured at an appropriate wave length.
It has been shown that oxinates of 18 metals (Al3+, Cr3+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ga3+, In3+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Mn2+, Mo6+, Ni2+, Nb5+, Tl3+, Th4+, Ti4+, U6+, V5+, W6+) and 8-hydroxyquinaldinates of 12 metals (Be2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Ga3+, In3+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Mo6+, Ni2+, Tl3+, Ti4+, V5+) are extracted quantitatively into chloroform. Optimum pH ranges for the extraction, wave lengths of maximum absorption, sensitivities (absorbancy corresponding to 1μg of metal), and working ranges of these metals are given. The separation and the determination of thallium was studied in detail. The presented data may be of great value in applied analyses.
