Description
Water-soluble fluorescent reagents, 1,8-di-(toluene-4-sulfonylamino)-naphthalene-3,6-disulfonic acid (BTND) and 1,8-di-(trifluoromethanesulfonylamino)-naphthalene-3,6-disulfonic acid (BTFND), were newly synthesized. The reactivities of these fluorescent reagents to Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, VV, Ag+, Fe3+, and Mg2+ were examined. BTFND was reacted with 8 metal ions, except for Pb2+, to show fluorescence quenching. BTND was selective to Cu2+, and the fluorescence was quenched quantitatively at pH 7 in an aqueous solution (λex=360 nm and λem=405 nm). The calibration graph for Cu2+ with BTND was rectilinear over the concentration range from 0 to 10-5 M and the detection limit was 2.0×10-7 M. BTND has many advantages, such as selectivity for Cu2+, high sensitivity, and a simple procedure.
