Description
An indirect atomic absorption method for the determination of anionic surfactants in water is proposed. The method is based on the extraction of the ion-pair formed between anionic surfactants and potassium-dibenzo-18-crown-6-cation (K-DBC-6). The proposed procedures are as follows. Take a sample containing (550) μg as DBS of anionic surfactant into a 100ml separating funnel and adjust the pH to about 5 with 10ml of K2SO4(0.02M) -CH3COONH4 (0.05M) solution and then make up to 50ml with water. Add 10ml of DBC-6 (5×10-4 M) MIBK solution. Shake for 1 min and allow to stand for several minutes. Discard the aqueous phase and wash the MIBK phase with 25ml of K2SO4(0. 004 M) -CH3COONH4 (0.01M) solution. Aspirate the MIBK phase to atomic absorption apparatus and measure the absorbance of potassium at 766.5nm. By this method, a linear relationship was obtained between the absorbance and theconcentration of anionic surfactant in the range of (550)μg as DBS. Large amounts of Li+ and Na + interfered, but their interference could be removed by washing the MIBK phase with K2SO4(0.004M) -CH3COONH4 (0.01M) solution. Good agreements were obtained between the values by this method and by methylene blue method on the analysis of river water and sewage
