The basic metal peroxides (MgO2, BaO2) were evaluated for chemiluminescence (CL) reaction media by means of a batch method. Luminol and lucigenin CL were chosen as model CL systems. Strong CL was observed solely on adding luminol and lucigenin solutions to MgO2 and BaO2 powders, respectively. The CL characteristics of this heterogeneous reaction system differed from those of a homogeneous reaction system, hydrogen peroxide oxidation in a basic solution. That is, the CL intensiy increased with a decrease in the pH of the solution added; also, Cr3+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ suppressed the luminol CL. It is likely that the CL reaction proceeds in different ways between MgO2 and BaO2, on which different reactive oxygen species are formed. The lower detection limits for luminol and lucigenin were 3 × 10-11 M and 3 × 10-12 M, respectively. Both metal peroxides were found to be unique CL reaction media that did not require any additional bases and oxidants.
