Abstract

In order to determine fluoride ion in mineral spring water, an ion-selective electrode method using standard addition and computer calculation was studied and compared with a conventional working curve method. The determination error due to the temperature change from 10 to 47°C was within ± 10%, while the error by the working curve method varied from +14 to -34%. The concentration change of sodium chloride in the sample greatly influenced the electrode potential, but not the recovery rate. This method also gave greater recovery rates than the working curve method even in the presence of many coexisting ions. However, aluminium ion of more than fluoride equivalent gave a negative error. In the mineral spring water containing a large quantity of salts, the recovery rate for 2 mgF/l was 102% with the RSD being 1.7% (n = 5). This technical procedure was simpler than the routine working curve method and satisfactorily accurate.
