A new method has been developed for the determination of microgram amount of Hg(II) by phase-sensitive AC-DC modulation cyclic voltammetry with the bipolar gold electrode. A pair of bipolar electrodes (working and counter electrodes) were kept in a state of imaginary short, and were floated against the current-carrying electrodes. The working electrode potential against reference electrode was maintained at a constant value by regulating the voltage applied to the current-carrying electrodes in an electrolytic cell. The signal of the system was obtained by measuring the AC current and phase difference between working and counter electrodes, and by comparing them with those at an applied AC-DC modulated potential (sinusoidal current, 130 Hz and 60 mVp-p). Mercury(II) in perchloric acid solution(50 ml) was introduced into the electrolysis cell, and clean electrodes were inserted. The faradaic current free of charging current was recorded as the AC-DC modulated potential was scanned cyclically between +0.4 and +1.4V(vs. Ag/AgCl) at a rate of 500 mV/min. The correlation between peak current in the anodic direction at about +0.9V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and Hg(II) concentration was linear ranged from 0.1 to 2 mg/ l.
