For the measurement of chromate ion or bichromate ion, chromate ion selective electrodes and bichromate ion selective electrodes have been prepared and tested. The coated wire electrodes were prepared by electrochemically coating silver wires with silver chromate or silver bichromate. The heterogeneous membrane electrode were prepared by dispersing activity sensitive materials, such as ion exchange resins, barium chromate or lead bichromate, into silicone rubber. Potassium chromate or potassium bichromate solution (0.1 M) was used as the internal reference solution along with an Ag/Ag2CrO4 or Ag/Ag2Cr2O7 internal reference electrode. The chromate ion selective electrodes or bichromate ion selective electrodes thus made were then examined in terms of their response curves, response time, effect of pH and temperature, and selectivity coefficients. The best results were obtained with the silver chromate-coated wire electrode for chromate ion and the Amberlyst A-27-heterogeneous membrane electrode for bichromate ion. The slopes of calibration curves were -30.7 mV/pCrO42- and -31.9 mV/pCr2O72- in the linear part, respectively. The good selectivity coefficients were obtained. A method was also proposed for the determination of chromate ion and bichromate ion in solutions by potentiometric argentometric titration using these electrodes.
