Determination of total nitrogen in water by a chemiluminescence method was investigated with catalysts conveniently prepared in the laboratory. Metal oxides such as MnO2, Fe2O3 and CuO were used as catalysts. Manganese dioxide being commercially available was used after being washed with 6 M hydrochloric acid and redistilled water, and heated in an electric furnace. Ferric oxide and cuppric oxide were prepared by sintering each hydroxide (from the metal ion with sodium hydroxide solution) in the electric furnace. At a temperature of 900 °C in an oxygen stream, signal intensities from the detector were proportional to the concentrations of total nitrogen from 0.2 to 280 N-ppm with each catalyst. The lower limit of detection (S/N=3) for MnO, CuO and Fe2O3 were 0.08, 0.11 and 0.17 N-ppm, respectively.
