Abstract

Ultra-fine particles have been used in many fields such as atomic, electronic, aerospace industries, owing to their special properties different from bulk material. However, small amounts of impurities in them do cause some problems such as electrical insulation defect and corrosion. Reflux at boiling point was done to extract chloride ion from the ultra-fine particles of silver, copper arid copper(I and II) oxides for a period of 40 to 60 h. This was followed by the determination of the ion concentration using spectrophotometry. The shape of extraction curve (concentration vs. time) was somewhat unusual and revealed a maximum concentration profile. But a plot of maximum chloride ion concentration against the sample weight gave either a linear relation or a convex curve. Using the respective slope of the linear part of the extraction curve, the concentration of chloride ion in the ultra-fine particles was obtained.
