Abstract

A rapid determination of wear metals in lubricating oils by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry has been studied. Accurate analysis of samples containing large wear particles was difficult without acid treatment. Therefore, acid treatment method has been investigated with synthetic samples. Sequential digestion of wear particles with HCl and HNO3 before dilution with organic solvent was effective. As a dilution solvent xylen/butyl cellosolve mixture (2:1) was chosen, because the mixed solvent is easy to introduce into the plasma and the easy to dissolve oil and acidinto one phase. The proposed method is as follows:A 1 g of oil sample was mixed with 100 μl of HCl in a test tube. The mixture was agitated in a ultrasonic bath for 10 min at 6080°C. After addition of 100 μl of HNO3, the mixture was agitated for 10 min at 6080°C again. The mixture was cooled and diluted to 10 ml with xylene/butyl cellosolve mixture before plasma emission analysis.
