Abstract

In 2005, Cyanoprokaryota 2 (Osillatoriales) was published in Süβwasserflora von Mitteleuropa. This new classification system reflects modern physiological, molecular, biochemical, ecological and ultrastructural information as well as data obtained using traditional approaches. The new system classifies Oscillatoriales into six families, Pseudanabaenaceae, Schizotrichaceae, Borziaceae, Phormidiaceae, Gomontiellaceae and Oscillatoriaceae based on the width of trichomes, position of thylakoids inside the cells, type of cell division, presence or absence of sheaths and number of trichomes in a sheath. These new oscillatorialean families and several important or revised genera are briefly presented in this article.
