Abstract

Orthocladiinae (Diptera: Chironomidae) comprises many genera, adapts to various environments, and has acquired various lifestyles. However, it is not clear how members of the subfamily have differentiated and enlarged their distribution areas. In this study, Orthocladiinae larvae and adults were collected throughout the Japanese Archipelagoes, a genetic tree was constructed for 33 genera, and morphological and genetic relationships were examined. Morphologically similar genera are also inclined to be genetically similar. However, in some cases, the genera within the same morphological groups are genetically quite distant, suggestingparallelism. On the other hand, this subfamily may have adapted to marine environments several times in its evolutionary history.
