In the previous papers, the writer studied the quantitative relation between the duration of crustal movement T and the magnitude M of resulting earthquake . Comparing this relation with Gutenberg-Richter's magnitude-frequency (N) relation, it has been shown TN=10 for shallow earthquakes in the Japan seismic zone . In the present paper, the writer reexamined those relations using materials of the Seismological Bulletin of the Japanese Meteorological Agency for the period 1926.0-1976 .0, extending the magnitudes to 5.0. It has been shown that the period 1926-1969 was quite active in large earthquakes, while the activity of small earthquakes of less than M 5 .4 was considerably stable throughout the period. Further he studied the activity of large earthquakes larger than 7.5 going back to 1896, examining various kinds of materials . It has been known that the period of activity may be divided into three, quiescent, primary and main active periods, and the length of full cycle may be presumed to be 113 years. Analysing the historical records, the seismic cycle in the Japan area might be considered as about 115 years which is consistent with the above mentioned period . Through the study the writer concluded that a series of earthquakes may be assumed as continuous phenomena, taking the precursor duration times in consideration .
