Description

The effect of sabo dam to prevent or reduce flood damage is seldom recognized because the deposition of sediment on river bed cannot be seen and the deposition is usually washed away soon after the flood. An example where a large sabo dam protected a village from a flood was analyzed. The data of sediment production, rainfall, deposition in the sabo dam, water level and grain size were surveyed. River bed elevation change, high water level and flooding area were estimated with a debris flow equation and a bedload equation on the assumption that the sabo dam had not existed. Through the calculation, the effect of a sabo dam was proved.
